I’ve been very lucky in my career to have my dream job over and over again at Google, Oceankind, and Conservation International. Even within Google, I changed teams several times to do something different. Why?
Because our dreams change.
If you’ve had success in your tech career but now don’t feel the same enthusiasm you once did, then just know you’re not alone. While I was at Google, I heard this exact thing in 1:1 coaching sessions with hundreds of my colleagues and from people at other top tech companies.
There’s nothing wrong with falling out of love with your job. The problem is not doing something about it once you know it.
During my tech career in Silicon Valley, I did very well by traditional standards: high-paying prestigious jobs at top companies, working on game-changing products, collaborating with the most brilliant people in the world on important projects.
And most of the time, I was absolutely 100% doing my dream job.
But my dreams would keep changing. Suddenly I didn’t belong anymore. My passion faded and I became disconnected and restless.
It wasn’t that I lacked ambition or the ability to do hard work and long hours. It's just that I felt too disconnected from the impact I was having. I wanted to use tech to solve problems and help nature, but I also knew that the world was more complex than any one widget could solve. It felt limiting and I needed to learn in the real world... in nature.
The truth is... and maybe this is a cliche... but you can "succeed" by the world’s standards and still feel lost or a bit empty inside. And, when you realize that, you might feel like you're the only one sitting in meetings dreaming of being somewhere else. If any part of that resonates with you, then just know you're not alone.
That’s exactly why I created this Tech To Nature community and the deep-dive program that I’ll be launching soon. As a product manager, I know to hyper-focus on the customer and the problem to be solved.
This is all for a specific niche: helping tech people like us shift our careers and lives toward doing more to help nature... and have some adventures in the process!
